4 reasons why trucks are especially dangerous

Any type of car accident can result in serious injuries and is certainly no picnic even when it does not. When a large truck becomes involved, however, the severity of injuries and property damage tends to climb.

One top factor that makes semitrailers far more dangerous than the average passenger vehicle is their sheer mass and length. Because trucks are so heavy, they take longer to come to a stop, while their length widens their turns and increases the risk of them hitting a car behind them.

Dangerous cargo

The cargo they carry can also increase the potential hazard trucks present. Some carry flammable or toxic substances. Other types of cargo may need particular care in securing, especially when transporting materials on a flatbed truck. Loose cargo falling onto the road can cause accidents. It can also add to the impact of an accident by hitting surrounding vehicles.

The driver cannot see you

Large trucks suffer from extensive blind zones. Truck drivers may be unable to see passenger vehicles behind, in front and to the side of them. Therefore, motorists should take care to keep their distance and not make sudden lane changes when traveling next to a truck. A good rule to keep in mind is that if you cannot see the truck driver in your mirror, the driver cannot see you.

Sleep deprived drivers

Driver fatigue is a serious problem that plagues the trucking industry. Despite lawmakers' efforts, most commercial drivers' schedules lead to severe undersleeping. A sleep deprived driver suffers from slow reflexes, lack of focus and bad judgement. Extreme fatigue can cause a driver to literally fall asleep at the wheel, with potentially devastating results.

All of these factors are good reasons to keep your distance and use extra caution when sharing the road with trucks. Unfortunately, accidents still happen. When a truck accident causes you serious injury, seeking out an experienced and knowledgeable attorney can set you on the road to getting the compensation you need.
