The many stresses that truckers face

With so many trucks on the roads, it should come as no wonder that there are so many accidents that involve trucks. What is even scarier is that, because trucks are so big and harder to stop, they can pose a great danger to people in smaller vehicles. In fact, these people are more at risk in crashes than the truckers themselves.

So, it stands to reason that it takes a special kind of person to be a trucker. However, the passage of time and the many stresses that truckers face can result in accidents for even some of the best truckers. Here is a look at some of the top stresses they face.

Little control of their schedules

Quite a few truckers lack control over their schedules. They must be ready to travel great distances on short notice and be willing to wait a long time between runs. This lack of control does not lend itself to emotional stability nor to a stable income.

Previous crash experience

Whether it was their own crash or a crash they became involved in as a bystander, many truckers experience a truck crash at least once. This can lead to conditions such as PTSD and further worsen a trucker's already precarious mental health.

From the uncertainty to the long hours to the lack of exercise opportunities, exhaustion is a problem for truckers. Some try to "solve" the issue by driving distracted, for example, hoping that texting with someone on a cellphone helps keep the trucker awake. Unfortunately, many of these solutions are just as problematic, if not more so, than exhaustion.

Time pressures

There is also the fact that some companies push truckers to make deliveries in narrow or impossible time frames. Thus, they feel compelled to take shortcuts, to improperly load cargo, to skimp on training, to speed, to skip sleep and to put off essentials such as an oil change or brake replacement.
