Closure in hit-and-run death may depend on witness coming forward

When someone dies after a long illness it is truly a time for grieving. At the same time, it may be somewhat easier to work through the sadness realizing that the outcome had been expected.

When death occurs due to unforeseen circumstances, loved ones may be left with nothing but anguish. The lingering questions about how and why such a thing could happen can make it difficult to come to terms with the situation. If death is caused by a motor vehicle accident in which the perpetrator flees the scene, there may be an unquenchable desire for justice.

This may be something that friends and loved ones of man may be experiencing now. Police in New Braunfels identify the victim as a 24-year-old Austin man. They say he was struck by a pickup truck early last Sunday morning as he was walking across a street. When first responders got to the scene, he was alive. But he was declared dead later at the San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Now the search is on for the person responsible. All authorities say they have to go on is a report describing a newer model black pickup truck leaving the scene.

Police are asking for the public's help in trying to identify that truck and locate it. On the chance that possible witnesses might be reluctant to come forward, authorities say individuals can remain anonymous by calling, texting or submitting information to the local Crime Stoppers program.

Information that leads to an arrest could net a tipster a $2,000 reward. But perhaps a greater motivation might be the relief that could be provided to the loved ones of the victim.
